New restaurant in Renaissance Park

2007-04-10

This is just a public service announcement. A new restaurant has opened up in Renaissance Park. The name of the place is Johnson’s Deli. They are open 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday, and then 11 a.m to 3 a.m. on Saturdays. (I don’t remember their Sunday hours.) Given that this location had been a quick credit place, I’m already happy with the improvement.

I was walking by tonight, and I had a brief chat with one of the employees. Indeed, he may have been the proprietor, although I’m not sure. His name is C.J., and I’m sure that he would appreciate some business. Personally, although I didn’t buy anything tonight, I fully intend to check out their hot wings in the very near future.

I like the idea of places like this existing in my neighborhood. So, I’m encouraging all of you: try out Johnson’s Deli. Then, come here and leave comments about your experience! I’ll do the same.

Falling in love with Renaissance Park

2007-04-07

Tonight Crystal and I left the house on a brief errand. I needed ginger for the kombucha that I was making, and our fresh ginger had grown mold. Guess that makes it less than fresh, huh? So anyways, the local Asian grocery store has ginger. So off we went! We walked down Orange Street to Main Street and then headed along Main Street towards University. At the Asian grocery, we bought the ginger that I needed, plus some tea and some delicious aloe drinks. Oh, and a ginseng drink of some kind, with an actual ginseng root floating in it.

So, for the entire trip, I was buzzing with excitement. Finally I figured out why. I was really excited to be living in my neighborhood. I walked out of my front door to an Asian market and bought fresh ginger! There was fresh ginger in my neighborhood!

I’ve said for a while that I’m really excited to live where I do. My neighborhood is somewhat isolated from automobile traffic, yet a fairly busy commercial district with a variety of local businesses is just a couple of blocks away. And today I was able to experience that yet again.

And I realized that I’m falling in love with where I live. I love where I am, and I am very happy to be here.

I still stand by the other things that I have said about Renaissance Park. And yet, flaws and all, I am glad to be here.

Hooray for Doyles!

2007-01-23

Last week our van started overheating. This is a bad thing. So we took our van to Terry Doyle Automotive Service. It ended up being an expensive job, but Doyle’s has a good reputation, and I figured that they weren’t going to rip me off. Given that the issue was Dexcool coagulating in the coolant system, I’m glad that we got it fixed. I winced when I wrote the check, but at least it was going to a reputable, honest mechanic.

Well, today we received a phone call from Doyles. Apparently they discovered that they had overbilled us by $60 and wanted us to come down and pick up a refund of that money. I was impressed. Honestly, mechanics don’t have a good reputation for being honest and upright in their dealings. But this…this was more than I would expect from most businesses. So, kudos to Doyles for their honesty. They’ve earned my trust, and that’s saying a lot.

So, if you’re needing to find someone to work on your car, go to Doyle’s. You may pay a bit more, but you will be getting excellent, honest service for the price.

Blog page on Peoria.com

I was just told about this. Apparently, the folks at Peoria.com automatically show posts from local bloggers with snippets from each post. That is very cool! Kudos to the folks at Peoria.com.

A new portal

There’s a new portal site in town: Peoria.com As a supporter of all things local, I’m pretty excited about this. Plus, there are forums…a dangerous thing….

A double date in Renaissance Park

2006-09-14

Tuesday night, Crystal and I went on a double date with James and Theresa. James had a couple of coupons for Haddad’s, a local Lebanese restaurant at the corner of Main and Bourland. The weather was stable, so we decided to walk.

I stand by what I said previously about Renaissance Park. But that includes what I said in the comments:

Again, to be clear, it’s a reality that I want to exist. I’m not rooting for the failure of the Renaissance Park project. I’d like to see the Main Street corridor be a center of business and culture. I’d love to live in a place like that.

So, to that end, I want to state that I really enjoyed being able to walk to Haddad’s and enjoy a really tasty gyro. I also enjoyed wandering down the street afterwards to One World, rooting around the business cards and flyers, and generally having a pleasant conversation with the others in our group. Indeed, we opted to stay at One World instead of going elsewhere for wings, specifically because we were enjoying the idea of staying in our broader neighborhood.

Oh yes, I also enjoyed having a friendly server at the table. Even though she was overwhelmed by the amount of business that evening and was making mistakes, she handled herself with grace. If the owners of One World happen to read this, give Emily a pat on the back. She did credit to your business.

Then, at the end of the night, we walked home.

It was a good night.

Update and Retraction!

2006-05-30

In this post, I mentioned that two other local game stores were out of business. I was incorrect. The Game Room in Washington moved from its old location to a new venue on the square in Washington. I don’t know what this does for parking, but it seems that this would be a more visible location. I do hope that they curb the smoking, though, or I fear that business will suffer.

So, good for the Game Room, and my apologies for the incorrect information.

Just For Fun Games

2006-05-02

Another in a series of short articles about local businesses.

As you have probably guessed by now, if you don’t already know me, I am very involved with hobby gaming. This includes both roleplaying games and board games. Indeed, as I’ve noted elsewhere, I run a monthly Game Night for my church, which is just one extension of my love for games.

However, these games can be somewhat hard to find. Often I have to go to specialty stores to find the games that I’m looking for. And, until recently, I was quite unhappy with the quality of the game stores in the area. The one was owned by a compulsive smoker, which didn’t improve the shopping experience at all. The other was in someone’s basement, which is a little too weird, even for me. And now, as far as I can tell, neither are still in business.

Perhaps Just For Fun Games is a part of the reason for this. Located at the intersection of Sheridan and Lake, this store has already surpassed the other competitors in the area.

First, they have a lit sign set up at the street intersection. This is how my wife and I discovered the store. This alone demonstrates some business savvy.

Second, the store itself is clean, well-lighted, smoke free, and family-friendly. I’ve been to enough game stores to know that this is an exception to the rule. I particularly appreciate that there are no cheesecake posters on the wall.

Third, they have a broad stock of games, well-displayed. Rather than trying to cram as many games onto a shelf as possible, they have most of their games arranged so that the box front faces outward. As a result, a browsing customer can walk down the aisles of the store and easily see what games are available.

Fourth, the staff is friendly. Of course, the staff is really just the owner and his wife, but they are both working on being helpful and knowledgeable about the games that they are selling. When I go into a small store of any kind, I’m hoping to find that the owner is an expert in his area who can assist me in making a purchasing decision. This is certainly true at Just For Fun Games.

I’m vaguely disappointed that, as of yet, Just For Fun does not have a website. Otherwise I’d be linking to them now. As it is, here is a Google Maps link that shows their location.

A quality game store is a rare find, and I’m pleased to say that Peoria finally has one. If you are at all interested in hobby gaming, please support Just For Fun Games.

The Spotted Cow

2006-03-26

Today we celebrated my daughter’s eighth birthday (which was yesterday). As part of the festivities, we went to The Spotted Cow in Peoria Heights. For those of you who don’t know, The Spotted Cow is a local ice cream parlor with three locations around Peoria. Their claim to fame is that they make their own ice cream on the premises. Once you get past the regular flavors, like vanilla or mint chocolate chip, you can also find such flavors as “spumoni” or “cherry chocolate”. The price is fairly reasonable, too. The Spotted Cow sells ice cream by the ounce, rather than the cone, so you are harged for the actual amount of ice cream that you are receiving. This seems fair to me.

If you enjoy ice cream, then support a local businessman and check out The Spotted Cow.

For those of you who don’t live here…you’ll just have to suffer.
